Become an Independent Trucker: What You Need to Know Before You Start

Being an independent trucker sounds like a good option but similar to a coin there are two sides to this. You’ll be operating under your own authority but what about the operating cost? Here are the main things to understand to keep your wheels turning.

What is Independent Trucking?

Independent trucking means several things: being in control of your schedule, routes, type of load you are willing to haul. And importantly keep all 100% of the profit to yourself. But with the same freedom comes several factors in operating including the cost, truck maintenance, Paperworks etc.

Feeling stuck already? Here’s how to manage your trucking company to maximize profit.

Where to start?

Picture this: You’ve got your truck, and you’re ready to hit the road. But wait! Before you press the gas, let’s talk about money. Owning a truck isn’t just about buying the rig. You’ve got fuel, maintenance, insurance, and permits to pay for too. It can feel like a big weight on your shoulders, especially when repairs need to happen fast.

Got your truck? Ready to hit the road?

We know how overwhelming starting a trucking company can be. Here’s what you need beforehand:

Commercial Driving License (CDL):

To be an Independent Trucker, first you’ll need to obtain a Commercial Driving License (CDL). If you are an existing company driver, you’ll already have your CDL.

Driver Qualification File (DQL):

Have your CDL? Great, but you need to know that there are several qualifications needed to start driving. Age requirement of 21, 10-year driving history and having a high school diploma. Here’s in-depth about Driver Qualification File (DQL)

FMCSA Regulations:

So, you are eligible for driving, now let's focus on the more logistical side of being an Independent Trucker. To be in the business all the employers and driver need to comply with FMCSA regulations written in FMCSA website includes:

1. Registering for a US Department of Transportation (USDOT) number

2. Opening an account on the FMCSA portal (an online database aimed to enhance roadway safety)

3. Confirming your USDOT number with the FMCSA Clearinghouse

4. Choose a consortium/third-party administrator (C/TPA), which will help keep you safe via managing regulatory compliance.

5. Confirming your TPA with the FMCSA Clearinghouse and granting them access via your portal

6. Purchasing a query plan, which allows employers and C/TPAs to perform queries of drivers’ Clearinghouse records.

Some of the other FMCSA regulations that you must be aware of and comply with include:

1. Hours of service regulations

2. Electronic logging device mandate

3. Safety fitness demonstration

4. Truck inspection and maintenance

5. Drug and alcohol testing

6. CDL requirements

7. Insurance requirements

All this Paperworks and compliance are the least fun part of being an owner operator. However, SUPERTRUCK exists solely to help you with all of your logistics while you focus on driving.

Finding Loads

The way to earn money by being an Independent Trucker is by hauling loads. There are different ways you can go to find loads and make money. For an Independent Trucker you need a dispatcher who deals with brokers and finds your load. There are many popular dispatchers.

Check out here for best dispatchers.

Maintaining Your Truck

Imagine your truck as your best friend. You wouldn’t want to ignore their needs, right? Regular maintenance is key. Oil changes, tire checks, and brake inspections are not just suggestions—they're necessities. A breakdown on the side of the road can mean lost time and money, putting a dent in your earnings and your sanity.

Long Hours on the Road

If you love long drives, being an independent trucker might sound like a dream. But let’s be real: those long hours can get exhausting. Sleepless nights and endless highways can lead to burnout. It’s essential to find a balance that keeps you healthy and alert. Remember, no load is worth risking your safety or others on the road.

Paperwork and its Importance

Being your own boss means you’re in charge of all the not-so-fun stuff too. Keeping track of invoices, expenses, and taxes might not be thrilling, but it’s necessary. Proper paperwork helps you stay on top of your finances and ensures you’re ready for tax season. Think of it like keeping your room clean; it’s not glamorous, but it pays off in the long run.

Building Relationships in the Industry

Networking isn’t just for corporate jobs. In trucking, relationships matter. Connecting with other independent drivers, brokers, and companies can open up new opportunities and loads. The more connections you build, the more doors open.

The Reward of Independence

At the end of the day, being an independent trucker has its perks. You make your own schedule, and the road is your office. Whether you enjoy the solitude of long drives or the excitement of visiting new places, there’s a certain thrill to being your own boss. It’s a lifestyle that brings with it freedom, adventure, and the satisfaction of building something yourself.

Final Thoughts:

Is Independent Trucking for You?

To wrap it up, being an independent trucker isn’t just a job; it’s a way of life. It’s filled with challenges and exciting moments alike. If you’re ready to embrace the freedom and responsibility, it could be a fantastic journey. Just remember, every mile you drive is a step toward your dreams. So, are you ready to hit the road?
