Hours of Service, or HOS, is a core part of the trucking world. Instituted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration-also known as FMCSA-these rules allow drivers adequate rest as a method to prevent accidents resulting from fatigue. 

More than legally required, for drivers and carriers, it is an issue of concern regarding safety based on the guidelines laid down by HOS.

 Driving Limit   

A driver may drive for no more than a total of 11 hours after having 10 consecutive hours off-duty. This rule ensures that drivers get enough time to rest prior to commencing long shifts.

The 14-Hour Rule

Once a driver begins a shift, there is a 14-hour window in which he or she can work, even if he or she hasn't reached the 11-hour driving maximum. This rule ensures that drivers do not work for too long a period of time in one stretch to ensure rest.

The 30-Minute Break

After 8 hours of driving, a driver is required to take a 30-minute break. This stoppage would lessen fatigue and allow for better concentration, thereby making safe driving possible.

The 60/70-Hour Weekly Limit

Drivers are not allowed to work more than 60 hours in 7 consecutive days or 70 hours in 8 consecutive days, whichever cycle their company operates on. This cumulative total is a long-term maximum to prevent drivers from accumulating too many hours over the span of a week.

The Sleeper Berth Provision

That is also where the flexibility comes in: drivers can be out in the sleeper berth for a minimum of 7 consecutive hours, which provides the ability to split the rest time while still sticking to HOS.
